PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. Brooklyn Nets Shirts . -- Tiger Woods was voted PGA Tour player of the year for the 11th time on the strength of his five big wins and return to No. 1 in the world. It was the third time Woods won the Jack Nicklaus Award despite not winning a major. He made up for that with two World Golf Championships and The Players Championship among his five wins. No one else won more than twice this year, and Woods won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average and the PGA Tour money title. "Its been an incredible year to have won five times, two of those World Golf Championships and one Players," Woods said on a conference call Friday. "Its been just a fantastic year all around. Its also an incredible feeling to be voted by your peers, and to have that type of respect is something thats very humbling." The PGA Tour does not release the percentage of votes won or even who finished second. Jordan Spieth was voted rookie of the year in a race that likely was no contest. The 20-year-old Texan began the year with no status on any tour. He won the John Deere Classic, lost in a playoff at another event, reached the Tour Championship, was chosen for the Presidents Cup team and wound up 10th on the money list with nearly $4 million. He will be the youngest American -- and first PGA Tour rookie -- to play in the Presidents Cup next week in Ohio. "I dont know if its a pinch me moment yet," Spieth said. "I think my mind is still really on next week." Woods was on the ballot with British Open champion Phil Mickelson, Masters champion Adam Scott, FedEx Cup champion Henrik Stenson and Matt Kuchar. Mickelson also won the Phoenix Open and was runner-up in the U.S. Open for the sixth time. Along with his first major, Scott won The Barclays. If either of them had won the Tour Championship, three wins and a major might have won some votes over five big wins and no majors. Mickelson, with more wins (42) and majors (five) than any player except for Woods dating to the Tom Watson generation, has never been PGA Tour player of the year, No. 1 in the world ranking or won a PGA Tour money title. The Jack Nicklaus Award began in 1990. In 24 years, Woods has won it 11 times and only two other players have won it twice -- Fred Couples (1991, 1992) and Nick Price (1993, 1994). It was the fourth time in the last five years that the winner did not capture a major. Woods nearly made it a clean sweep of all the awards. Steve Stricker narrowly beat him out for the Byron Nelson Award with a 65 on the final day at East Lake in the Tour Championship. That award is for lowest scoring average, though it is not as prestigious as the Vardon Trophy from the PGA of America. The Vardon Trophy dates to 1937 and requires 60 rounds (instead of 50 for the PGA Tours version of the award) with no incomplete rounds. It was the first time since 2009, right before his personal life unraveled, that Woods won these awards. Even though he has more of them than anyone in history, he said that it doesnt get old. "I know how hard it is," Woods said. "Ive had to work my way back from injuries on numerous occasions throughout the years. These last couple years is no exception to that. There were a lot of people saying I could never win again, and two years later Ive got eight wins on our tour. Im very proud of where Ive come from, from being ranked outside the top 50 to being ranked where I am now, and to have had the success that Ive had this year just makes it all the more rewarding." He said his biggest win this year was at The Players Championship, mainly because its the one golf course he plays regularly that has given him fits. His other wins this year came on courses where he won for at least the fourth time. "You start playing golf courses that you like and that suit your game," Woods said. "Guys generally play that schedule and give themselves the best opportunity to win tournaments and to have a nice living out on tour. For me, The Players Championship is the big event and against probably the strongest field we play all year. I havent had a lot of success since 2001. "To finally put myself there with the chance and the way I was hitting it to get it done on that Sunday, boy, it sure felt good." Woods and Spieth won two different awards, though both pointed to the area of improvement -- the majors. Woods has been stuck on 14 majors since 2008, though he had a chance in the final round this year at the British Open. Spieth missed the cut at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship and tied for 44th in the British Open. "I think next year Im really going to focus on those," said Spieth, who is No. 21 in the world. "Maybe build a schedule or game plan around how to have success and maybe compete at those four events, and I think that would be a better year for me." The Rock will open up their main training camp on Saturday, Nov. 30 at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre in Oakville. Rose will enter his third season with the Rock in 2014 and has a 15-6 regular season won-lost record since being acquired from Calgary at the 2012 NLL trade deadline. The 25-year old led the NLL in wins in 2013 with 10 and had the third best goals-against average at 10.61. "Nick is emerging as one of the elite goaltenders in our league," said Sanderson. "We are confident that Nick can give us the type of goaltending we need to be successful." Toronto also signed two of their key offensive left-hannders in forwards Josh Sanderson and Stephan Leblanc. Nets Jerseys 2020. Sanderson, 36, has signed a one-year agreement and will be entering his 17th NLL season and 7th with the Rock in 2014. The Orangeville, Ontario native finished third on the team with 29 goals and was third in points with 62 in 2013. Leblanc has signed a three-year agreement that will run through the 2016 season. He has played all four of his NLL seasons with the Rock and was the NLL rookie of the year in 2010. The 27-year old forward has accumulated 281 points in just 63 career regular season games. On the defensive side of the ball, the Rock have signed Sandy Chapman and Jesse Gamble to two-year agreements and Bill Greer and Mike Lum-Walker to one-year agreements. All of the above signings are pending league approval. ' ' '
TORONTO – Marcus Stroman is returning to the Blue Jays and will make his first career major league start on Saturday against the Kansas City Royals. Fake Sports Jerseys . The purpose, as laid out by manager John Gibbons, is two-fold. "We want to get Stroman up here and give him a look," said Gibbons, identifying the first part of the equation. "Our thinking was were going to back (Drew Hutchison) off a couple of days. (Mark) Buehrle will throw Sunday. Hutch will throw Tuesday in Detroit. The plan all along, coming in, was we were going to pick some spots and give Hutch a little breather." Stromans time was coming sooner rather than later, whether it was Saturday, late next week or sometime in June. This is as much about shielding Hutchison, the 23-year-old right-hander who occupies one of the top three spots in Torontos starting rotation along with Buehrle and R.A. Dickey. Hutchison, remember, underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery in July 2012. After a year-long recovery, he threw 26 2/3 innings in seven minor league starts late last year and followed that up with 21 2/3 innings in six starts in the Arizona Fall League. Do the math: Hutchison entered this season having thrown 48 1/3 innings of competitive baseball in the better part of two years. Already in 2014, in 11 starts for Toronto, Hutchison has thrown 65 innings. "After his last start I thought he looked a little bit tired," said Gibbons. "I thought it was the perfect time to give him a couple of extra days." To accommodate Stroman on the active roster, the Blue Jays designated reliever Bobby Korecky for assignment just one day after selecting his contract from the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. Korecky retired the final four Royals hitters in mop up duty on Friday night. The Jays fell to Kansas City 6-1. With Stroman throwing Saturday, followed by Buehrle on Sunday, an off day on Monday, Hutchison on Tuesday, Dickey on Wednesday and J.A. Happ on Thursday, Gibbons could return to Buehrle for Friday nights game against the St. Louis Cardinals. His other option is to go with a six-man rotation for the time being, something he considered earlier this season before Brandon Morrows injury changed the plan, and continue to include Liam Hendriks in the mix. "Doesnt mean anything right now," said Gibbons of Hendriks status. "Hes on schedule. Hell pitch sometime at the end of next week when hes scheduled." A six-man rotation? "No, were not sure how its all going to play out," said Gibbons. Stroman made five appearances out of the bullpen in an earlier stint with the Blue Jays this season. The results were mixed but he thrived in high-leverage situations, including getting his first big league victory in a 6-5, 10-inning win over Philadelphia on May 5. Groomed since the beginning of last season to be a starter, Stroman will bring his swagger to the mound on Saturday and his former Bisons teammate, catcher Erik Kratz, is looking forward to seeing it. "He sees that his stuff plays when hes on and when his stuff is on there are very few who are as good as he is," said Kratz. "Theres a reason hes a prospect or whatever it is or that hes being asked to come in and start in the rotation. I expect to see a guy thats going to come out and give everything hes got and have a lot of success." Stroman was sent back to Buffalo after the Blue Jays wrapped up a series in Texas almost two weeks ago. He alluded to some confusion over not having been a starter in his first go round in Toronto. Stroman sports a 3.03 ERA and a 1.150 WHIP for Buffalo. Kratz thinks hell be more comfortable with a defined role. "I think it was hard for him to understand where he needed to be out in the bullpen," said Kratz. "Does he throw all of his pitches? Does he not throw all of his pitches? The way that he goes out in the game, hes a gamer, thats something that I think he learned from his first time, that his stuff plays. He just needs to keep going after guys." The Royals have won two in a row to take a 2-1 lead in the series and sent Jason Vargas to the mound against Ryan Vogelsong. The Giants scratched out the first run after Gregor Blanco drew a leadoff walk in the first inning, went to second base on a wild pitch, stole third and scored when Hunter Pence beat a throw to first to break up a double play. But the Royals can manufacture runs, too, and got a little help doing so in the third. They beat out two throws to spark a two-out, four-run rally in the inning that was punctuated by run-scoring singles from Omar Infante annd Salvador Perez. Discount Sports Jerseys . First, Lorenzo Cain legged out an infield single to short that moved Alex Gordon to third. Then, Gordon scored when Eric Hosmer beat Vogelsong to the base on his slow grounder. Vogelsong, who initially tried to field the ball off the mound to his left, was several feet away from the bag when he caught first baseman Brandon Belts throw. Mike Moustakas walked to load the bases and Infante delivered a two-run hit up the middle. Perez followed with a line drive to center that scored another run, giving the Royals a 4-1 lead and chasing Vogelsong from the game. Matt Duffy hit a pinch-hit single to lead off the bottom of the third inning and later scored from second base on Buster Poseys single to left field to draw the Giants within 4-2. ' ' '
