DORTMUND, Germany -- Borussia Dortmund is in the quarterfinals of the Champions League for the second consecutive season -- although it looks far less intimidating than the team that reached the final last year. Edinson Volquez Jersey . Crippled by a series of injuries to key players and struggling at home this season, Dortmund was far from convincing in a 2-1 defeat to Zenit on Wednesday. However, the 4-2 victory in the first leg in St. Petersburg was enough for Juergen Klopps side to win 5-4 on aggregate and seal its place in Fridays draw. Hulk scored in the 16th for Zenit and captain Sebastian Kehl equalized for Dortmund in the 38th. Substitute Jose Rondon scored with a diving header in the 73rd to seal Zenits win on the night, though it was an empty victory. Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller turned away a late shot by Igor Smolnikov to prevent an even bigger defeat. In the nights other match, Manchester United advanced with a 3-0 win over Olympiakos, courtesy of a hat trick by Robin van Persie and a 3-2 victory on aggregate. "We surely didnt play a great game but we are in the quarterfinals," Kehl said. "That goal by Kehl allowed us to calm down," said Klopp, who acknowledged the quality of the Russian side. "They can really play and they gave us some problems." Dortmund will be without striker Robert Lewandowski for the first leg of the quarterfinals after he picked up his third yellow card of the competition for handling the ball. "I thought I had been pushed from behind and thats why handled the ball," Lewandowski said. "The main thing is that we went through." "The yellow card was laughable," Klopp said. With its comfortable lead from the first leg, Dortmund allowed Zenit to get into the match quickly, through a spectacular solo effort by Hulk. The Brazil striker shook off Kehl and cut inside past two defenders to blast a left-foot shot that swerved away from goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller on its way into the net. Zenit threatened a couple more times before Kehl got the equalizer. Marcel Schmelzer broke down the left flank and swung in a high cross. Kehl raced into the area and rose above the defence to send in a header that keeper Vyacheslav Malafeev got both hands to -- but could only push into the net. It was the captains first Champions League goal in 30 matches. "They have some good players up front but we didnt allow them too many chances," Kehl said. Early in the second half, Hulk unleashed a fierce free kick from about 30 metres (yards) that sailed high. Rondon scored Zenits second following a cross by Domenico Criscito from just outside the penalty area on the left -- evading defender Mats Hummels to head home from close range. Zenit, coached by Sergei Semak on an interim basis until Andre Villas-Boas takes over when the team returns home, kept up the pressure and Igor Smolnikov sent a low shot that Weidenfeller barely managed to turn away in the 88th. The last time Dortmund made it to the last eight in two straight seasons was 16 years ago. It won the title in 1997 and then reached the semifinals. HBI 1: DENMARK IMPRESSING Denmark is sure to be more than cannon fodder in Group B. The Danes are the first team in memory promoted from Division I to come in and demonstrate they can play on an equal footing with incumbent World Junior Pool A teams. Russia had no players better than Nikolaj Ehlers and Oliver Bjorkstrand and were fortunate to escape with a shootout victory. HBI 2: McDAVID LINE FACING SCRUTINY Connor McDavid deserved better than zero points vs Slovakia, but was outplayed by 2015 draft rival Jack Eichel on Day 1. Kansas City Royals Gear. The question is, how long will the Ritchie-McDavid-Lazar line be left intact by head coach Benoit Groulx? This will be a moot question if the McDavid averaging nearly three points per game in the OHL emerges today. HBI 3: THATCHER DEMKO USA puck stopper Thatcher Demko has been a question mark for me, but I thought he was solid vs. Finland. He surrendered an own goal – the puck went off 2016 uber-prospect Auston Matthews – and stopped two of three shootout attempts. His job will be as much to not lose games as win them for the Americans. ' ' '
TORONTO – Marcus Stroman is returning to the Blue Jays and will make his first career major league start on Saturday against the Kansas City Royals. Fake Sports Jerseys . The purpose, as laid out by manager John Gibbons, is two-fold. "We want to get Stroman up here and give him a look," said Gibbons, identifying the first part of the equation. "Our thinking was were going to back (Drew Hutchison) off a couple of days. (Mark) Buehrle will throw Sunday. Hutch will throw Tuesday in Detroit. The plan all along, coming in, was we were going to pick some spots and give Hutch a little breather." Stromans time was coming sooner rather than later, whether it was Saturday, late next week or sometime in June. This is as much about shielding Hutchison, the 23-year-old right-hander who occupies one of the top three spots in Torontos starting rotation along with Buehrle and R.A. Dickey. Hutchison, remember, underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery in July 2012. After a year-long recovery, he threw 26 2/3 innings in seven minor league starts late last year and followed that up with 21 2/3 innings in six starts in the Arizona Fall League. Do the math: Hutchison entered this season having thrown 48 1/3 innings of competitive baseball in the better part of two years. Already in 2014, in 11 starts for Toronto, Hutchison has thrown 65 innings. "After his last start I thought he looked a little bit tired," said Gibbons. "I thought it was the perfect time to give him a couple of extra days." To accommodate Stroman on the active roster, the Blue Jays designated reliever Bobby Korecky for assignment just one day after selecting his contract from the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. Korecky retired the final four Royals hitters in mop up duty on Friday night. The Jays fell to Kansas City 6-1. With Stroman throwing Saturday, followed by Buehrle on Sunday, an off day on Monday, Hutchison on Tuesday, Dickey on Wednesday and J.A. Happ on Thursday, Gibbons could return to Buehrle for Friday nights game against the St. Louis Cardinals. His other option is to go with a six-man rotation for the time being, something he considered earlier this season before Brandon Morrows injury changed the plan, and continue to include Liam Hendriks in the mix. "Doesnt mean anything right now," said Gibbons of Hendriks status. "Hes on schedule. Hell pitch sometime at the end of next week when hes scheduled." A six-man rotation? "No, were not sure how its all going to play out," said Gibbons. Stroman made five appearances out of the bullpen in an earlier stint with the Blue Jays this season. The results were mixed but he thrived in high-leverage situations, including getting his first big league victory in a 6-5, 10-inning win over Philadelphia on May 5. Groomed since the beginning of last season to be a starter, Stroman will bring his swagger to the mound on Saturday and his former Bisons teammate, catcher Erik Kratz, is looking forward to seeing it. "He sees that his stuff plays when hes on and when his stuff is on there are very few who are as good as he is," said Kratz. "Theres a reason hes a prospect or whatever it is or that hes being asked to come in and start in the rotation. I expect to see a guy thats going to come out and give everything hes got and have a lot of success." Stroman was sent back to Buffalo after the Blue Jays wrapped up a series in Texas almost two weeks ago. He alluded to some confusion over not having been a starter in his first go round in Toronto. Stroman sports a 3.03 ERA and a 1.150 WHIP for Buffalo. Kratz thinks hell be more comfortable with a defined role. "I think it was hard for him to understand where he needed to be out in the bullpen," said Kratz. "Does he throw all of his pitches? Does he not throw all of his pitches? The way that he goes out in the game, hes a gamer, thats something that I think he learned from his first time, that his stuff plays. He just needs to keep going after guys." The Royals have won two in a row to take a 2-1 lead in the series and sent Jason Vargas to the mound against Ryan Vogelsong. The Giants scratched out the first run after Gregor Blanco drew a leadoff walk in the first inning, went to second base on a wild pitch, stole third and scored when Hunter Pence beat a throw to first to break up a double play. But the Royals can manufacture runs, too, and got a little help doing so in the third. They beat out two throws to spark a two-out, four-run rally in the inning that was punctuated by run-scoring singles from Omar Infante annd Salvador Perez. Discount Sports Jerseys . First, Lorenzo Cain legged out an infield single to short that moved Alex Gordon to third. Then, Gordon scored when Eric Hosmer beat Vogelsong to the base on his slow grounder. Vogelsong, who initially tried to field the ball off the mound to his left, was several feet away from the bag when he caught first baseman Brandon Belts throw. Mike Moustakas walked to load the bases and Infante delivered a two-run hit up the middle. Perez followed with a line drive to center that scored another run, giving the Royals a 4-1 lead and chasing Vogelsong from the game. Matt Duffy hit a pinch-hit single to lead off the bottom of the third inning and later scored from second base on Buster Poseys single to left field to draw the Giants within 4-2. ' ' '
